Aviation Safeguarding Assessments
Identify aviation questions early and keep your planning application moving.
GTech helps developers, architects and planning teams assess aviation safeguarding matters for tall buildings, wind farms and other developments. Early checks help identify the information and consultation needed before design decisions become expensive to change.
Choose your airport
Start with an airport-specific page or request advice for your proposed development.
Manchester and Birmingham have free online checkers. For other airports, select an airport to request professional advice.
Planning support from the first check to consultation
We can help review the development envelope, scope obstacle and radar assessments and coordinate liaison with the airport safeguarding team and NATS where required. Building height, site elevation, rooftop plant and construction cranes can all affect the work needed. Wind farms may also require radar and flight-procedure review.
What does an OLS map tell you?
Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS) are protected surfaces around an airport. Horizontal, conical, approach and transitional surfaces have different heights and slopes. Several may cover the same site. Our free maps identify plan overlaps; they do not calculate a permitted height or grant aviation clearance.
Airport safeguarding maps, radar criteria and flight procedures are separate matters. A site outside the modelled OLS area may still require professional review.

The airport list uses the ten busiest UK airports by 2025 terminal passenger traffic, from CAA airport statistics. This is a navigation list, not a ranking of safeguarding risk. For another airport, contact GTech.
